ANGER

Trying to stay calm…

ANGER

Are you getting angry when you play?

Trying to stay calm and keep on an even keel whilst playing casino games or sports betting, is not as easy at it may seem. You may run into a sticky patch of bad luck, or games not going your way. It becomes so easy to get frustrated and angry, and lose your composure. This can result in you making bad choices.

So, if you suffer feelings of anger when your luck is running against you – take a break and give yourself time to cool off.

Play

BORROW

To win back losses…

BORROW

Are you borrowing money to gamble?

Whilst gambling is portrayed as fun, it’s not strictly the case for all players and heavy losses can lead to borrowing money in an attempt to win back losses. This is never a good idea as borrowing can lead to further problems. So, please set limits on your spend and despite urges to borrow, it is just best to accept your losses, and not create a worse place for your finances.

It’s said to only gamble what you can afford and to be fair it's a very good statement.

Play

CHASE

A very risky strategy…

CHASE

Do you chase losses over and over?

This is the word used by players to describe trying to win back losses, i.e. chase your money. This is a very risky strategy as it involves you spending beyond any preset limits and can induce a feeling of panic as it can spiral quickly into a session of play that can do financial and mind damage – losing a sense of proportion of the money is easily induced.

It further endorses why setting limits is integral.

Play

DOPAMINE

A powerful stimulant…

DOPAMINE

How much are you getting?

Dopamine is the chemical released during a state of pleasure and excitement and is a very powerful stimulant which along with adrenaline is experienced by most players. It is particularly active during high risk games and when you are having big wins or losses.

It can alter the way that even the most disciplined player thinks and despite the highs it can create, again it can cause a player to break their limits.

Play

EXCITED

Can lead to gambling issues…

EXCITED

Do you get excited too often in play?

Excitement, pleasure, fun, adrenaline, risk-taking, all words that are commonly linked with gambling . . . but, any surplus feelings of any of the above can lead to gambling issues. This is because, if gambling becomes more about these things than the money, or time spent, and you become a pleasure seeker –

it can be an emotion that you should seek elsewhere in life.

Play

FORGET

Gambling to forget things…

FORGET

Are you gambling to forget other things?

Are you playing because you want to forget about things in your life? Maybe you have problems, as most of us do, and you want to escape these by gambling. This is not a good idea because if your mind is elsewhere, but you’re trying to forget things, your lack of gameplay focus is hampered.

If your emotions are running higher or lower than normal, try something else to escape the feelings you have.

Play

GAMBLE

Maybe you don't know why…

GAMBLE

. . . Just why do you gamble?

Do you like the challenge of predicting sports results? The possibility of winning money on slots, or other games which have no skill at all and are quick and easy to play? Maybe you don’t even know why you gamble. Maybe it’s been normalised so much you just do it! But, whatever the reason –

spending too much time, too much money, is a sign that you need to think of controlling it, before it controls you.

Play

HARM

Take care, to take care…

HARM

. . . Just how much am I putting my body through?

What is meant by harm? Well financially, unless you budget and set affordable limits that you should always expect to lose, you can very easily overspend, creating a hole in your pocket which will therefore impact on other parts of your life. Health-wise, well playing for long periods on games, or betting on too many sports, may lead to stress, anxiety, mood fluctuations and many other mental and physical strains.

So, take care . . . to take care.

Play

INTERFERING

With other things in your life…

INTERFERING

Is gambling playing too big a part in your life?

If you somehow find yourself spending too much time on gambling there is a fair chance you are neglecting yourself and other things in your life, maybe even neglecting work, or family commitments. Because it’s so accessible to gamble either on your phone, or laptop, or just to pop into the bookies –

we are probably unaware of just how often it interferes with our time.

Play

JIGGY

A rush…

JIGGY

Do you get adrenaline rushes in play?

During gameplay, or whilst watching a live sporting event, you will more often than not get ‘jiggy’ – excited, anxious at the result. You will experience an adrenaline rush and often shout or scream for a winner, either inwardly or out loud!

But, having too much of these things can set your brain in a bad ‘default’ setting, which is then setting a standard of replication that will require you to put your body and mind through a tough test each time you play, creating more harm than fun in your life.

Play

KNOWLEDGE

Knowing as much as you can...

KNOWLEDGE

How much do you know about the product you're playing?

Knowing as much as you can about the game you play is vital. Is it fast paced? Is it slow? Does it need any skill? All things to consider . . . in sports, you may analyse the form of the teams or competitors, to make a skill-based bet and then just sit back and watch. But, in casino games and slots, the action is fast, fast, fast, and that can lead you into making more bets than intended as you get sucked into the pace of play.

So, learn as much prior to playing your favourite game.

Play

LOSE

How you react when you lose…

LOSE

Do you increase your bets or stakes after losing?

Whether or not it's sports betting, bingo, or casino games playing, how you react when you lose is perhaps the most powerful emotion experienced within gambling. For those that can’t stop, for those that must have another bet or spin, I urge you to think very, very, seriously about this . . . possibly above everything else in your gambling bubble. It is never, ever, ever any good to bet in excess due to losses, for it needs acceptance at that moment that either your luck is out, or you just cannot pick a winner.

Hindsight is no good to you, so please try to recognise this in play, and accept that a loss is part of gambling.

Play

MISS

A near miss often stimulates…

MISS

When you get a near miss, do you lose control of your actions?

A near miss causes frustration and often stimulates the brain to want another bet or spin. But the simple fact is that a bet, or spin, either wins or loses. Whether you lose 1-0 or 5-0 – you lose your money. If you get 2 cherries not 3 in a row on a slot – you lose. The fact that you were so close rather than nowhere near, causes a ‘desire' for another go.

Try and treat any loss as a loss, and don’t let the result entice you into trying again . . . and again . . . and again . . .

Play

NO

Saying no isn't easy…

NO

No, you don’t have to keep betting. If it’s getting too much, just say no.

Saying no to lots of things in life isn’t easy, but discipline in gambling is the best strategy a player can adopt. This isn’t as easy as it sounds, because for many people they have developed stronger ‘yes’ feelings than ‘no’ feelings.

The best thought pattern is to say ‘NO’ to yourself if you possibly can, but if you can’t then please consider you may be losing control and either seek advice, or talk to someone, or of course, both.

Play

OPTIONS

Best player options…

OPTIONS

Learn more about setting time and money limits.

I cannot emphasise enough that setting time and money limits is the best player option. Of course, we all have different ideas of what we think are safe. Some people binge play and have sessions lasting many hours and this needs to be thought about because in general –

if you spend more than an hour a day gambling, it needs reviewing. As for the money side of it, ‘disposable income’ is the only income you should use, however much that is for you, because that is what you can afford.

Play

PLAY

Is very risky if you're bored or unwell…

PLAY

Try not to play just out of boredom and avoid playing if you feel unwell.

Playing or betting if you are bored, or tired, or unwell, is potentially very risky, because if your mind isn't focused on your activity, then it can lead you to overplay and overspend. Just pushing a button to start a game is so simple, yet if you are elsewhere in your mind during play, it’s so, so easy to play on and on and on, way beyond your original plan.

If your clarity of mind isn’t 100% – do something else!

Play

QUIT

When it's getting too much…

QUIT

If it’s getting too much, stop, take a break and do something else.

When it’s getting too much for you and you can feel yourself losing control, that you just cannot win, but you need a win, you crave a win, then that is a point to say to yourself – QUIT! – stop – take a break – have some fresh air – and realise you cannot cope. It isn’t your fault if this happens, some games just cause this reaction.

Quitting isn’t being weak, it’s a sign of strength – and it will empower you to deal with where you are at.

Play

RUSH

So many games are mega fast-paced…

RUSH

Play slower than the game wants you to and don’t get agitated by bad luck.

So many games, slots in particular, are at a mega-fast pace, circa 2 seconds and the spin is over . . . that’s 30 games in a minute . . . 1800 an hour! That causes by definition a rush of chemicals to the brain, irrespective of whether you win or lose.

So, play slower than the game wants you to and absorb the reactions at a rate that doesn’t get you out of your comfort zone.

Play

SUICIDE

Getting suicidal thoughts and feelings – STOP & seek help

SUICIDE

If it's feeling way too much and you’re getting suicidal thoughts, stop and seek professional help immediately.

A very serious consequence of living with gambling problems is suicidal thoughts and feelings. Don’t underestimate what is going on. Gambling problems really can make you feel like this and recognising it is a very important step. Act quickly on these thoughts and feelings.

Anybody suffering to this level, should seek professional help immediately.

SamaritansPlay

THINK

About what you're betting on or playing…

THINK

If the game or slot machine is overwhelming you, don’t keep thinking your luck will change.

There are a huge amount of different sports to bet on and an even greater number of casino games and slots to play. Before you risk your time and money, think about what you’re betting or playing. Do I have a personality that may not be suited to certain games?

Try to play ‘demo’ games for free just to see if it gets to your headspace too much – we all think differently – and we certainly all respond differently, so find out what sort of gambler you are as soon as possible.

Play

UNDERSTAND

How you react to wins and losses…

UNDERSTAND

Gambling for many is fun, but for an ever-increasing number it is a risky activity, so take care.

If you can understand why you play, or why you bet as you do, then you are likely to stay in control. But, it isn’t as easy as that and having an awareness of how you react to wins and losses is a great tool to have. The range of emotions for a gambler is as varied and as complex as is humanly possible – and it is fair to say that we all have different reactions and responses to each product or bet outcomes. And understanding that helps control gameplay.

So, a bit of self analysis is never a bad thing.

Play

VICTORY

Taking control of your actions…

VICTORY

Control your betting rather than it controlling you, it’s the best and biggest win you will have.

A win gives you a financial reward, a confidence boost, an exciting feeling and feels like pure bliss, but a loss makes you angry, makes you agitated, makes you sad …

… so, with such a range of things to deal with, get to know your own reactions, because taking control of your actions in play is a victory and very rewarding for your wellbeing.

Play

WIN

Can be a risky mindset…

WIN

Ask yourself ... when you win a lot, do you keep playing for more than you intended?

So, you’re a winner . . . your horse wins, your team wins . . . you predict the number on a spin of the wheel. But, does this winning streak get you to bet more and more and more? If it does, then even though you’re playing with ‘winnings’ it can create a feeling of a ‘bottomless kitty’.

Just like lose – lose – lose, win – win – win can be a risky mindset. Use your ‘limits’ to prevent free-fall occurring.

Play

XFACTOR

Being in charge…

XFACTOR

… if gambling is too enticing and controlling you, then find something else in your life to replace it.

Gambling is now a huge social and health issue for both men and women. Throughout this guide of player advice, you will see a wide range of statements and coping strategies which when you employ them will give you the Xfactor.

Being in charge of your betting is a talent in itself – and be kind to yourself more often if you experience deep, deep lows.

Play

YOU

Why this is really important…

YOU

Always be honest with yourself about your gambling.

Being honest with yourself about your gambling is such an enhancing quality. Some people do win long-term, but for the vast majority it's a recreational social thing and they show little or no profit over a lifetime. Why is this really important though? Because we invest our time, our health and our money in it when we gamble.

So, overall, try to enjoy the experience, but Don't bet YOUR LIFE on it.

Play

ZEN

Staying in the moment…

ZEN

Try and stay in the moment, control your own destiny and make better betting choices. Be a master.

Staying in the moment, not losing control, trying to make informed choices . . . just a few of the many coping mechanisms that have been outlined here to help you. If you’re someone who is in control and feels happy with their gambling habits, then that is good.

But if you are not, then hopefully this read will help you make some better decisions and become a safer player.

What to do to stop and stay stopped

Listen to Audio

“It could be that despite all of your efforts to control the gambling, you can’t do it and you need to stop”

You are not alone.

Many have done it before you.

To stop and remain stopped requires some practical tools though, so please use a combination of self-exclusion and try to exclude for a longer period than you think you need. Put Apps that act as blockers on all your devices, and be prepared to move your bank account to Banks who offer gambling Blockers if your bank does not already do so.

Failing that, ask someone you trust to look after your money and bank cards until you are much further into recovery and feel you can trust yourself again.

But don’t wait, Do It Today.

Getting the right help is important.

So, talking to other recovering gamblers helps, counselling and therapies help, groups help, understanding yourself helps. Find something to suit you.
